Sound Definitions
Sound effects : delay
Delay in general
Delay refers to any type of effect that adds a delayed version of the original signal, to create effects such as reverb or echo. Often delay can also be detrimental to sound. Controlled delay is usually in the form of effects, including such like flanger. Non-intentional delay, such as the delay caused by the distance of broadcaster and receiver, or the delay that is often known as room reverb can be detrimental to the signal or sound.
Dance music delay
In terms of dance music, delay is especially critical. Often artists use special effects that add delay to the sound. These delay effects are imbedded in the sound and are reproduced by the speaker. On the other hand, when playing loud speakers in an hard-walled room, reverb (a form of sound delay), is very detrimental to the sound, because wave cancellation and reinforcement keeps occurring between present and past signals. When we talk about past signals, we are only referring to a few milliseconds.
